For more than half a century the U.S. government has deployed military advisors to provide hands-on assistance to America's Allies and to supervise the distribution of military aide and equipment. From modest beginnings in 1950, when the first U.S. Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) was created to support French Legionnaires in Southeast Asia fighting the Communist Viet Minh, until 1961, when the Kennedy Administration sent 3,200 military advisors to support the South Vietnam's Diem government under the re-constituted Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV), the American Military Advisor has proven invaluable, not only on the battlefield, but, providing security and peace once the guns have fallen silent.
Since Vietnam Military Advisors have served in Central and South America, on the front lines of America's war on illegal drugs. Today, thousands of Military Advisory Teams have been trained to stand-up Iraq and Afghanistan security forces, the tip of the spear in America's Global War on Terrorism.
